Archaeology Notes

Stone navigation Leading mark for entrance to David's harbour: still in use

Site recorded by Maritime Fife during the Coastal Assessment Survey for Historic Scotland, Kincardine to Fife Ness 1996

Activities

Field Visit (25 December 2014)

There is a mortared, stone-built pillar just above the high water mark 460m E of St David’s harbour, which did not serve as a beacon as noted in a previous account, but simply provided a line of sight for boats entering the harbour. First depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch (1897, Sheet XLIII.NE), it measures 1.5m in diameter at ground-level and rises to a height of 2.55m, tapering gradually to a rounded top.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 25 December 2014.
