NLO: Montrose [name: NO 720 572]
Scurdie Ness [name: NO 735 567].
Aberdeen, 19th Feb. The sloop JOSEPHINE, of and for Montrose, from Sunderland, coal-laden, grounded on the rocks near the former place 17th inst., and it is feared that she will not be got off.
Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 10,586, London, Monday February 21 1848.
NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8336).
(Classified as sloop, with cargo of coal: date of loss cited as 17 February 1848). Josephine: [this vessel] stranded on rocks near the entrance to Montrose [harbour], and [was] not expected to get off.
Registration: Montrose.
(Location of loss cited as N56 42.25 W2 26.00).
I G Whittaker 1998.
(Location entered as NO c. 72 56 [N56 42 W2 27]). The location assigned to this record remains unverified. The vessel most probably stranded on the rocks that extend to the W of Scurdie Ness.
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 20 July 2006.
(Location of loss entered as NO c. 725 569 [N56 42.2 W2 27.0]). The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Montrose Harbour or the Port of Montrose (NO75NW 44.00) occupies an ill-defined area around NO 7123 5121. It does not have clearly-defined entrance, but is approached (from the E) between the extensive estuarine sandbanks of the River South Esk, which extend as far E as Scurdie Ness [name: NO 735 567]. The vessel evidently stranded within the area of these sandbanks.
Montroseness (Scurdie Ness) Lighthouse (NO75NW 48) is situated at NO 73322 56758, and defines the S side of the outer approach to the harbour.
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 14 November 2011.
