Archaeology Notes

HZ27SW 8059 c. 21 72

N59 32 W1 38

NLO: Fair Isle [name centred HZ 21 72].

Lerwick, 20th June. The stern of a long boat, marked 'LIBERTY, of Scarboro', Kidd', also a ship's bowsprit, have been found at Fair Isle.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 12,246, London, Friday June 24 1853.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 8897).

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from the reported location of the discovery of wreckage. It remains unclear whether or not the discovery of the boat and wreckage represent the loss of a vessel. If so, she may have foundered out at sea, possibly beyond Scottish waters.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 25 September 2006.
