Archaeology Notes

NJ90NE 8269 c. 963 060

N57 8.7 W2 3.7

NLO: Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05].

Aberdeen, 14th Mar. The CROMARTY (schooner), Ganson, in entering the harbour 11th Mar., struck the North pier, and was towed in by a tug boat: she had previously lost an anchor in the bay.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 12,782, London, Thursday March 15 1855.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 9112).

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Aberdeen Harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) is centred at NJ 95 05, and the North Pier (NJ90NE 7.02) extends from NJ 9590 0570 to NJ 9639 0609. The present entrance may be considered to extend from NJ c. 959 056 to NJ 964 059, but this location reflects development towards the East through the construction of successive piers and breakwaters.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably on account of her successful recovery.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 3 October 2006.
