Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 19 119 235.

(NO 1194 2350) Supposed site of St. Ann's Chapel and Hospital (NR)

OS 1:500 map, 1863.

The Chapel and Hospital dedicated to St Anne stood on the south side of St John's Church and the east side of St Ann's Lane. It may have been founded by a family, Donyng, who were prominent in the 14th. and 15th. centuries. The chapel was destroyed in 1559 but the hospital was in use until 1586.

R S Fittes 1885.

Opinion is that the chapel stood on the east side of St. Ann's Lane, but on our plans and 1792 (MacFarlane's) dated 1765 its place or site is down on the west side of the lane. While on one dated 1774 (Rutherford's) its site is maarked about 65 links east side off the lane. A few years ago large quantities of human bones were dug up here, but whether it belonged to St. John's Church burial ground or not is not known.

Name Book 1860.

(NO 1194 2349) On the east side of St Ann's Lane is an old door socket, with almost opposite it on the west side, a door lintel.

(NO 1194 2351) The reputed crypt of St Anne's Chapel remains in cellars below Hunter Printers and Commercial School. Information from M E C Stewart 9 January 1961.
