Archaeology Notes

NS56SE 2187 NS 597 649

Medieval/post-medieval urban NS 597 649 An evaluation and subsequent excavation were undertaken between July 2004 and February 2005 at a site on the High Street, defined to the S by the western end of Gallowgate, to the N by Bell Street/McPherson Street, and to the E by Watson Street. A total of 523m2 was investigated by means of evaluation

trenches and a small area strip. Deep 19th- and 20th-century cellarage was identified along Gallowgate, Bell Street, McPherson Street and Watson Street. Along the High Street frontage, areas of relatively light cellarage were identified. This area was evaluated further by means of an area strip, which led to full excavation of an area 900m2.

Late medieval features were identified in this area, and these were excavated and recorded. These features mainly comprised pits associated with refuse disposal, sand extraction and possibly small-scale industrial activity; several contained waterlogged remains. A few post-holes were recorded but formed no discernible pattern. To the S of the site, the remnants of the base of a stone-lined well were excavated, badly truncated by 19th-century cellarage.

A watching brief carried out in the SW of the development identified no archaeological deposits. Further watching brief visits to record pits in the NW of the site demonstrated the destructive effects of piling on these features.
