(NO 1681 3602 - NO 1734 3648) Abbey Road (NR)

OS 6" map (1901)

Abbey Road is an old track through Strelitz Wood by which fuel is said to have been taken to Coupar Angus Abbey, from Campsie. The continuation is supposed to have crossed Coupar Burn at the old bridge (NO13NE 25). Crawford, however, thinks it may be an old road from Coupar to Perth. He also remarks that the track marked 'Roman Road' on the 6" (1901 edn.) between Woodlands and Strelitz Wood at Wellsies (NO 191 372), continuing for half a mile into Strelitz Wood, is really the old Abbey road; if continued it would link up quite easily with the track so called in Gallowhill Wood.

OSA 1793; Name Book 1865; O G S Crawford 1949

The alleged course of this road was perambulated between NO 1681 3602 and NO 2011 3766. Throughout this stretch no well-defined road is evident, the course being defined by Forestry Commission roads and rides or disused and overgrown tracks. No alternative route was found (eg. to the old bridge - NO13NE 25). A forestry ride at NO 1843 3715 is signposted ' Roman Road' but this seems to have been derived from OS plans by the Commissioners.
