(NO 1774 4501) Meet Hillock [NAT] (Name at NO 1778 4500)

Urns found [NAT]

OS 25" map (1865)

About 1823 two 'Roman cinerary urns' containing burnt bones were found in a large mound of gravel which workmen were removing in the western part of the town. The urns were thrown away.

NSA 1845 (R McDonald)

Meet Hillock is a small eminence, originally possibly a natural gravel mound which has been nearly levelled and cultivated as a garden. In the trenching of it two cinerary urns and a number of ancient coins were found; some of the latter, the owner of the garden, Mr. Neilson, has retained.

Name Book 1864

Although access could not be obtained to the garden at NO 1774 4501 it was apparent that any mound remaining is very much spread as the ground, although not level, is even. No further information.

Visited by OS (RDL) 21 March 1963.

Note (1990)

NO14NE 16 1774 4501

About 1823 two cinerary urns containing bones were discovered when a large, probably natural, mound of gravel was removed from an area now occupied by housing; pottery was discarded by the workmen.
