Archaeology Notes

NO44SW 25 NO 4018 4158

This boundary marker is situated on the heather-grown NE flank of Ironside Hill and comprises what is either a large earth-fast boulder or an area of outcrop, the upper surface of which bears an incised cross, an incised T-shaped motif and an Ordnance Survey spot-height. The cross has been cut into the highest part of the rock, which stands just 0.2m above the surrounding ground, and it measures about 320mm from NW to SE by 0.27mm transversely. The shorter bar is situated off-centre, towards the SE end of the longer. The T-shaped motif, which is situated immediately SW of the cross, measures about 160mm in length from WNW to ESE and the bar of the T at the ESE end measures about 140mm in length. The OS spot-height marker comprises an incised arrow and a small drilled hole that once may have held a brass stud.

The boundary marker is depicted as a boundary stone on the Glamis and Tealing parish boundary on both the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Forfarshire 1865, sheet xliv; 1903, sheet xliv.SW).
