Archaeology Notes

NJ66SW 21.11 centred 62200 62800

A group of hut bases are situated in Crow's Wood, some 30 of which are depicted on the current OS digital maps. Several are much larger and were for mess halls and recreational puposes.

The camp was to house Womens Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) personnel serving on the airfield and was deliberately located separate from the other (male) accommodation sites.

The huts are visible on vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 108, frames 3056-3057, flown 23 May 1946), which show that at that date there were at least 35 huts, mainly of the Nissen type.

The site was not visited during a survey of the area.
