Archaeology Notes

NN70SW 200 72952 01736

Situated at the N boundary of Moray Park, immediately S of the abandoned railway is the remains of a spigot mrtar mounting. On the date of visit by the Council Archaeologist only the pin was visible.

Information via E-mail to RCAHMs from Ms Lorna Main, Archaeology Service, Environmental Services, Stirling Council, 31 July 2008.

The remains of a Motley (spigot mortar) mounting for a Boyce anti tank gun are situated immediately behind a large deciduous tree on the N side of Moray Park, between the dismantled railway boundary and the playing area. The location of the concrete emplacement was confirmed by tape using the fence line to the E and the S fence line of the railway.

Only the framework of the top section of the mounting is visible above ground level. The diameter of the framework measures 69cm, the base plate 30cm and the pin height above the plate is 10cm with the diameter at 5cm. These measurements appear to match those of other mortar mountings.

Though the surrounding ground was investigated, it is not known whether the pit has been filled in or if the remains have been moved.

This installation forms one of four in the Doune area.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE), 14 August 2008
