World War One Audit of Surviving Remains (6 November 2013)

One of nine known blockhouses (what would be known in the Second World War as 'pillboxes') built in the First World War, to defend the fortress of Inchkeith.This example lies at the southern end of the bay below the Officers' quarters.

NT28SE 5.23 29108 83007

A seven sided blockhouse/pillbox is situated on a low rocky ridge, W of the stone cottage 'quarters' (NT28SE 5.25). Set into the slope it is built mainly of concrete with a pre-cast concrete roof, the loopholes having been bricked up. Grass is growing on the roof.

No access was gained on the date of visit.

A project to characterise the quantity and quality of the Scottish resource of known surviving remains of the First World War. Carried out in partnership between Historic Scotland and RCAHMS.
