World War One Audit of Surviving Remains (4 November 2013)

Two engine houses were built on the island in the main to provide power for the defence Electric Lights. An undated War Office map (The National Archive WO 78/5162, possibly dates to 1915) shows the northern engine room in the location in which it still survives. The engine room is of brick with a concrete roof, measuring 14m by 11m, with the blocks to mount the engines still in situ. Immediately to the north is the oil store (6m by 5m), with oil tanks inside.

Information from HS/RCAHMS World War One Audit Project (GJB) 4 November 2013.

Architecture Notes

NT28SE 5.26 29169 83024

Brick and concrete flat roofed engine house, engine blocks still in situ. Immediately to the N is the oil store with oil tanks inside. The engine house measures about 14m by 11m overall with an outshot to the SE. Four window openings with metal frames and three doorways with metal doors. Interior compartments with traces of orginal paint scheme and some wall fittings in situ.

The oil store building is flat roofed built of concrete and measures about 6m by 5m, the roof having a chamfered edge. Internally two rows of metal tanks were noted, but entry to the building was not attempted.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE, AL, JM), 25 February,, 4 and 5th March 2009

Following a photographic survey in February 2009, RCAHMS returned to Inchkeith in February 2010 to undertake a measured drawing survey of selected structures.

On the W side of the track at the top of the cliff a small structure was noted with a concave floor. This is probably to allow a 50 gallon oil drum to be placed on it to allow it to be drained into the oil storage building below (NT28SE 5.26), via a pipe system.

Activities

Project (March 2013 - September 2013)
