Helmsdale, 22nd Feb. While the pilot boat here was engaged rendering assistance to one of the fishing boats, which was stranded on the East Spit at the harbour mouth, she was run down and almost cut in two by another fishing boat, the MORNING STAR, of Hopeman, coming in, and the chief pilot was drowned: the stranded boat has become a wreck.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Helmsdale Harbour (ND01NW 61.00) is centred at ND 03002 15154.

The vessel wrecked 'on the East Spit' may have been the Dunrobin Castle (ND01NW 8013).

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).
