World War One Audit of Surviving Remains (2 October 2013)

The rifle range is marked on the 3rd epoch map of the area and lies only about 1.2km WSW of the Rothesay drill hall.

Archaeology Notes

NS06SE 408 0734 6393.

A rifle range, which ran along the N side of Craigberoch Wood, is depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Buteshire 1897, Sheet CCIV NW). In between a small square building (NS 0788 6396) at the E end and a flagstaff (NS 0721 6406) on high ground at the W end there were two targets, one with firing positions at 100 yard intervals ranging 300yds to 600yds, the other with firing positions set out at distances of 200yds and 300yds.
