Field Visit (16 September 2009)

This cast-iron mileplate is set against the NW face of a stone field wall on the SE verge of the A914 public road 500m SW of Pitlessie. It measures 0.56m in breadth by up to 0.1m in thickness and 0.85m in height, and its front face notes the distance in miles to Pettycur (17), New Inn (4), Cupar (5) and Newport (16). The top edge bears the name ‘Alex Russell’, the date ‘1824’ and the name ‘Kirkcaldy Foundry’.

The mileplate is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife and Kinross 1856, sheet 17).
