Archaeology Notes

NJ27SW 8069 c. 236 706

N57 43.1 W3 17

NLO: Lossiemouth [name: NJ 235 705].

(No classification specified: cargo cited as oats and meal, and date of loss 31 March 1828). Unknown: this vessel was wrecked behind the East Pier, [at] Lossiemouth [harbour].

(Location of loss cited as N57 43.50 W3 16.75).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. The date cited indicates that the harbour in question was the Old Harbour (NJ27SW 18.00) at Lossiemouth (at the mouth of the River Lossie) rather than the successor harbour at Branderburgh (NJ27SW 17.00), which dates from 1839.

An East ('Old') Pier (NJ27SW 18.02) is distinguished at the earlier harbour, and the vessel preseumably stranded on the E (seawards) side of this structure.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 9 March 2011.
