Archaeology Notes

HY52NE 2 55 28.

A low knoll, evidently marking the site of an early structure, possibly a cairn, now almost entirely destroyed lies west of Knoll of Merrigarth (HY 553 288) on the slope of the hill 1/4mile north of HY52NE 3. It is about 30' in diameter and shows many imbedded stones.

The land round about has apparently been under cultivation for some considerable time.

A mound 200 yds. NW of HY52NE4 is scheduled.

RCAHMS 1946, visited 1928.

There is no trace and no local knowledge of a mound to the W or NW of Knoll of Merrigarth.

Possibly HY52NE 7.(RCAHMS frequently transpose cardinal points).

Visited by OS(RL) 28 April 1970.

HY 554 290 Scheduled mound. ie 200 yds NE of HY52NE 4.

SDD 1983.

In 1928 Corrie described a mound about 30 feet (9.1m) in diameter and situated some '50 yards or so from the precipitous rocky shoreline at the W side of the island'; wrongly he used the name Knowe of Merrigarth for the site (HY52NE 4). His siting, however, is also inaccurate; it is possible that what he saw is here recorded as HY52NE 3 or it may be another unlocated mound further N a long the W coast of War Ness and thus possibly the scheduled, but unlocated, mound '200 yards NW' of the 'Knowe of Merrigarth'.

RCAHMS 1984.
