The lands of Forthir, with the tower, fortalice and manor, etc., are mentioned in a royal confirmation charter, dated 27th January, 1551.

'Forther', a seat or noted house, is shown by Ainslie approximately where East Forthar (NO 301 064) stands today.

No further information was found. Enquiries at East Forthar revealed no knowledge of any tower etc.

Field Visit (11 May 1928)

House, East Forthar.

Beside the farm cottages of East Forthar farm are the remains of a house of indeterminate date. It has been at least two storeys in height. On plan it has originally been oblong, measuring 22 feet from north to south by 44 feet 2 inches from east to west over walls 2 feet 2 inches thick. An extension has been added at the south-eastangle.

RCAHMS 1933, visited 11 May 1928.
