Loss (5 May 1786)
(No classification specified: cargo cited as salt, and date of loss as 5 May 1786). Maria: [this vessel] stranded at the head of [the] South Pier, Aberdeen. Capt. Clark. All gone?
(Location of loss cited as N57 8.60 W2 3.50).
I G Whittaker 1998.
Note (17 August 2011)
(Location of loss cited as NJ c. 961 057 [N57 8.5 W2 4]). The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. The location of the 'South Pier' remains unclear but it presumably stood within Aberdeen harbour entrance. Both the Old South Breakwater (NJ90NE 7.04) and the South Breakwater (NJ90NE 7.05) apparently postdate the loss of this vessel.
Aberdeen Harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) is centred at NJ 95 05. The present entrance may be considered to lie at NJ c. 963 060, but this location reflects development towards the East through the construction of successive piers and breakwaters.
