Activities

Field Visit (28 April 2010)

This rectangular enclosure, which measures about 8m from WNW to ESE by 4m transversely over a ruinous wall, is situated 200m SSE of the farmstead at Little Ham. Both the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Shetland 1882, sheet viii) and the 2nd edition of the 25-inch map (Shetland 1902, sheet viii.12) depict this enclosure, and another (HP60SW 243) a short distance to the W, attached to the N side of a curvilinear field wall. Since 1900, when the revision survey for the later map was undertaken, that wall has become redundant and superseded by a new stone dyke, now ruinous, which overlies the SE corner of the enclosure and dog-legs to the W before crossing its SW corner. Some rebuilding of the enclosure has evidently taken place in more recent times as its E end appears now to overlie the ruined wall. At least four heaps of cleared stones lie in the field to the S of the enclosure.Visited by RCAHMS (ARG) 28 April 2010.
