OS 1/500 map (1858)
A hospital and Maison Dieu was founded by the Trinitarians about 1390, its grant being incorporated and confirmed in a charter of Robert III (1390-1406). It was for the infirm, aged and ailing. How long the Trinitarians held this hospital is not known but for some time before the Reformation the Town Council appointed the master and chaplain. It was burned by the English in 1548, but the Almshouse and 'the puir and sick men thereof' are referred to in 1553.
Maxwell (1884) assumes that there was a Trinitarian house here but there is not mention of a convent in the burgh charters, and references to a Trinitarian foundation by Sir James Scrymgeour in 1283 or 1285 are undoubtedly erroneous.
Part of a c.1651 building which had ceased to be used as a hospital c.1778 still stood in 1878 (J Beats 1878).
