Description

This small fragment is of considerable interest. It bears on one face the left-hand arm and part of the ring and central square panel of a cross-head. The slab was rounded at the top, following the line of the ring, and the arm extends a little from the side of the slab. The arm is cusped in form, with a double roll-moulded border, and it contains an interlaced serpent whose head is biting its own tail. The central panel appears to have been plain, and the two surviving armpits show an ornamental division into two.

Date range: ninth or tenth century.
