Archaeology Notes

NO38SE 1 38 81.

The remains of shieling huts can be seen between Wolf Craig (NO 380 823) and Hunt Hill (NO 380 805), on the road to Loch Lee. Here, at the foot of a steep slope, by a stream, is a group of foundations. The older ones, some of which have mounded up to a considerable height during the centuries of their use, are oval in shape, often with a smaller oval storage hut or chamber attached. The later ones are rectangular, about 29ft (8.8m) long by 12ft (3.6m) wide, with rounded corners, sometimes with two compartments, and with a smaller hut measuring about 18 by 12ft (5.4 by 3.6 m) standing near by, but not attached. These date from the second half of the 18th century.

A Fenton 1976.
