Archaeology Notes

HY61NE 4 6724 1640

(HY 6724 1640) Standing Stone (NR).

OS 6" map, Orkney, 2nd ed., (1900).

A large much-weathered slab of slaty stone facing north-south and packed at base with few small stones. It is 9' high tapering towards the top, while at 4' above ground level it is 3'4" broad, but to judge from a bulbous projection low down on the north face, this has been reduced from 5 1/2" by a peeling away of successive layers on the side that is most exposed. (RCAHMS 1946) (RCAHMS has transposed the descriptions of this stone and HY61NE 5).

Visited by OS (AA), 4 August 1970.

This slab, on a NE facing hillside, stands to an average height of 2.5m above the irregular depression in which its stone-packed base is set.

On th e same E-W alignment and 2.4m E of it,is a pair of parallel erect slabs, 0.8 m apart, and protruding about 0.3m high. These appear to have been the packing of a second standing stone.

RCAHMS 1984, visited August 1983.
