World War One Audit of Surviving Remains (10 June 2013)

Montrose (Upper Dysart) was the first Royal Flying Corps base in Scotland, established in February 1913, until it moved to Montrose (Broomfield) later in the year. Many of the men were housed in Panmure Barracks, in Montrose. There are no known remains and the precise location and extent of the air station is unclear.

Activities

Note (10 June 2013)

The actual location of this airfield is unknown. The location of the airfield as noted by Fife (2007) may be incorrect, as steep ground lies to the W which would affect operations. Another option would be the field to the E of Upper Dysart (NO 6923 5337).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 10 June 2013.

Project (March 2013 - September 2013)

A project to characterise the quantity and quality of the Scottish resource of known surviving remains of the First World War. Carried out in partnership between Historic Scotland and RCAHMS.
