Archaeology Notes

HY62NW 26 6349 2732

On top of banks, along edge of cultivated field, a settlement mound, truncated on the NE side by ploughing, 0.3m high. It extends NW-SE, 4m wide at NW end, 7m at SE, its SW face in the banks being eroded, the exposed face of settlement material 45m long. The exposure is of drystone masonry, tumbled stones, and erect slabs, but no midden is apparent. It extends about 1.0m below surface of mound. At SE end of mound a gash has been made where tractors come down to shore. This must be an old naust-site because it directly faces a cleared batsto with the foreshore rocks, with a jetty of edge-packed transverse slabs on its SE side. Immediately SE of the gash is another square platform, with indications of a rectangular building, 5m NW-SE by 9m SW-NE over walls 0.9m thick. The platform itself is about 10m SW-NE by 12m NW-SE.
