Archaeology Notes

NO50SW 14 507 007.

The particulars of a discovery made in 1740 do not seem to have been recorded. A very old resident of Elie, now dead, spoke of an underground cave having been come upon in cutting down and uprooting some trees. In it were a number of stone coffins ranged in the shape of a horse shoe, and piled one above another.

C Howie 1878

At Ardross, in a subterraneous excavation, executed with care and lined with rough rubble work, first opened about 1760, several coffins were found ranged in the shape of a horse-shoe, along with bones of different animals. (There are at least two souterrains in the vicinity and this structure could be another one. See NO50SW 12 and NO50SW 13 ).

W Wood 1887

Area NO 508 007. "Stone coffins" have been exposed in the cliff edge at Ardross Castle from time to time. One, found in 1904 by Mr Jamieson's grandfather, contained bones and a gold ring about 1/8" thick, but since lost.

Information from J Jamieson, 3 Moorland Grove, Doncaster letter to National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS), 12 June 1974.
