Archaeology Notes

NO51NW 19 5148 1662.

(NO 5148 1662) St Magdalene's Chapel, St Andrews. 'Part of the base of an Early English clustered column was found in a grave on the 5th of May 1911, seventy feet to the south of the eastmost window in the south side of St Rule's Chapel. As it rested on a solidly built foundation about four feet below the present surface it is quite certain that it was in situ and it may be regarded as indicating the site of St Magdalene's Chapel', which was therefore 'very near to the old Parish Church (9 SW 17) to St Rule's (9 SW 2.1) to the Cathedral (9 SW 2) and to the Culdee Chapel (9 SW 7)'.

D H Fleming 1931

St Magdalene's Chapel is mentioned in a charter as late as 16th of April 1571, but there are now no remains.

J Grierson 1838

No trace seen in area described by Fleming. The site is occupied by the graveyard.
