A battle, said to have been fought between the laird of Aberluthnet (old name for Marykirk: NO 686 656), and the laird of Canterland (NO 7064) and Balmaleedie (burn of Balmaleedie: NO 695 657), with their retainers. Their quarrel was over the siting of a mill now called Spear Mill because they fought with spears (NO 689 650), 'but when this happened none can precisely tell.' (See NO66NE 1).
