Archaeology Notes

NO68NE 1 c. 6593 8691.

A Late Bronze Age Hoard of two swords - Ewart Park type: one broken - and two spearheads - Class V, was found on Heatheryhaugh farm in 1951 and donated to Montrose Museum by James Brandie of Montrose. It dates from the 8th century BC.

The approximate find spot at NO 6593 8691 was indicated on the 6" sheet by Mr Brandie (J Brandie, 68 Southesk Street, Montrose) who gave the hoard to Montrose Museum a few days after ploughing it up.

Heatheryhaugh farm is no longer permanently occupied.

Visited by OS (R L) 16 December 1971.

(Ewart Park type - Northern unclassified). Turned up by plough. Sword, missing top of hilt; length 41.7cm, shoulder width 4.25cm, maximum blade width 2.95cm; mid green smooth patina. Some corrosion. Patina where hilt has been (outline remains) is a slate colour; rivets ?:2, one in situ. Montrose Museum (1977.79).
