(Location cited as NO 722 570). Lighthouse, Montrose Harbour, early 19th century, engineer Robert Stevenson. A tall slightly tapering tower with a small lantern, now a beacon.

(Montrose 2: location cited as NO 722 569). Near mouth of river: 1818 and mid 20th century. Similar to Montrose 1, but shorter, now reduced to four battered masonry base courses. Replacement slightly to N has two tubular steel columns supporting railed platform with square lantern. Fixed ladder with guards on upper part.

This beacon forms a pair of leading lights with the inner light (NO75NW 44.12), defining the S side of the channel of the River South Esk.
