Archaeology Notes

NR39SE 4 3811 9347

(NR 3810 9348) A dun (visible on RAF APs 106G/Scot/UK 34: 4055-6, flown 1946) which fits the topographical descriptions of Dunan Leathan given by Grieve and Piggott - i.e. on Cnoc an Ardrigh, a small flat-topped hill on the SE side of the hill on the west of the Garvard road and close to it; and south of the Machrins road, but near the junction of both.

Little trace remains, the stones having been removed for building purposes, but a roughly circular wall about 43' in diameter, which does not exactly follow the contour of the hilltop is identifiable, with a possible entrance on the SW.

S Grieve 1923; S Piggott and C M Piggott 1948

NR 3811 9347. The robbed remains of a dun, measuring 15.0m E-W by 12.0m, within a narrow band of rubble. The entrance is not apparent and the interior is featureless.

Survyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (BS) 9 April 1974

Activities

Field Visit (April 1978)

NR 381 934. On the summit of a rocky spur situated some 280m NNW of Milbuie there is an oval dun measuring 17m by 13.5m internally. Its wall has for the most part been reduced to a low stony mound, but on the N two outer facing-stones are still in position. The entrance probablv lay on the SW. A hammer-stone, which was found on the date of visit, is in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland.

RCAHMS 1984, visited April 1978.

Measured Survey (1979)

RCAHMS surveyed the dun at Dunan Leathan in 1979 at 1:400. The plan was redrawn in ink and published at a reduced size (RCAHMS 1984, fig. 111A).
