Archaeology Notes

NR64NW 24 6438 4838

(NR 6438 4838) Stone Cross (NR) (Site of).

OS 6" map, (1924)

The approximate site of a cross which was seen by Pennant in 1772 but which fell and broke some years before 1794. Pennant thought it had probably been formed from a standing stone. The hill is still known as Cnoc no Croise - Hill of the Cross.

T Pennant 1774; Name Book 1869.

The pit out of which the stump was taken, long after the cross itself had been broken and had disappeared, still remains open.

R S G Anderson 1939.

Activities

Field Visit (17 January 1978)

A pit measuring 2.0m by 1.4m by 0.3m deep, lying in close proximity to the OS site is possibly that mentioned by Anderson (1939). Whether the cross stood here is questionable.

Visited by OS (J B) 17 January 1978.
