(Name: NR 6450 9707) Maclaine's Skull (NAT)

OS 6" map (1900)

This name applies to a piece of ground. It derives from a skull, traditionally that of the then chief Maclaine of Lochbuie, slain here with his followers in an encounter with the Campbells of Craignish, being dug up on this spot a long time ago.

Name Book 1878

NR 6440 9695. The Craignish Campbells and the Macleans fought twice in 1647 in N Jura, at Barnhill and Glengarrisdala; at the latter, under a large rock on the shore, there can be seen a skull, said to be of a Maclean. It is also noted there by Rideout. Local people say that it was moved to its present position in the 1920's (information from F Celoria).

J Mercer 1974; E H Rideout 1932

"Maclean's Skull" (name verified) has been removed, but about six human bones remain under the overhanging rock at NR 6443 9707. The present whereabouts of the skull is not known.

Surveyed at 1/10,000.

Visited by OS (NKB) 7 May 1978
