Archaeology Notes

NR75NE 9 76425 56050

(NR 7642 5604) The parish church at Clachan was erected c 1760 and probably replaces an earlier building on the same site. There appears to be no evidence to support the view that the medieval church stood at Balinakill (c/f NR75NE 4 and NR75NE 6 ) and the presence in the churchyard of a considerable number of carved stones of Early Christian and medieval date argues strongly against it. The dedication appears to have been to St. Colmaneala or Columbanus, a contemporary of St. Columba.

Among the stones in the graveyard: A - 1.70m long - Early Christian (White 1875), B - 1.32m long x 0.43m - Early Christian (RCAHMS 1971), C - An undecorated medieval cross, though it is just possible that this is Early Christian (White 1875); Medieval Slabs D and E (White 1875) were not found by the RCAHMS. There are also a number of other Medieval West Highland Slabs.

T P White 1875; RCAHMS 1971, visited 1966.
