Archaeology Notes

NS25NW 15 2244 5921.

The Gogo Mound is situated in the Gogo Glen (NS 21 59), on the right bank of the stream, some distance below where it is joined by the Greta. It is a small hillock of stones and earth, 9 paces in diameter and 3ft high. It looks as if it had been opened at one time.

J Smith 1895

No trace of an artificial mound was found during a perambulation of the Gogo Glen. Some small rock outcrops occur near the stream, but they do not answer Smith's description.

Visited by OS (DS) 20 September 1956

A small mound at NS 2244 5921, on one of the few level terraces of the Gogo Glen, answers Smith's description. It measures 9 by 8m and 0.7m high and comprises a turf-capped outcrop with some small stone dumping on its W side; it is not an antiquity. There is another swelling on a slightly lower terrace, immediately above the river some 30m to the SW, but this is less conspicuous and evidently natural (see also NS25NW 16).

Visited by OS (JRL) 8 February 1983
