Archaeology Notes

NS32SW 111 337 218.

Several test trenches were excavated and two auger samples taken from the west side of High Street on cleared plots between Carrick Vennel and Arthur Street, by R Gourlay and Dr R Waite. All of these showed apparently undisturbed sand within 1.0m of the present surface level and underlying only modern building rubble. It would appear from this that early deposits have been removed altogether from the area, probably during building operations during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is possible, however, though unlikely, that this sand consists of windblown material as in the Sandgate area, with early deposits surviving at considerable depth.

R Gourlay and A Turner 1977
