Archaeology Notes

NS32SW 112 333 222.

The discovery, by R Gourlay, of a quantity of medieval potsherds from the surface and within dark soil in rear of the most northerly bastion of the Cromwellian Citadel (see NS32SW 15) in South Harbour Street, led to the excavation of the site by members of the Ayrshire Archaeological and Natural History Society under the direction of Dr Waite. This was carried out over the winter of 1976-77. Large quantities of pottery

were recoverd, some of it apparently early, perhaps 12th-13th century

in date, although the context from which it came suggests that the material had been redeposited from elsewhere. Associated with this pottery was a stone wall, retaining the sand slope beneath the back gardens of Montgomerie Terrace, and apparently that indicated on Tessin's Plan as part of the Cromwellian defences.

R Gourlay and A Turner 1977.
