Archaeology Notes

NS32SW 135 341 214

A glazed, Tuscan-shaped pitcher was found many years ago on top of the rock in Townhead Quarry, some 30ft to 40ft below the present ground surface, along with a 'kettle', subsequently lost.

NSA 1845

This jug, 5.3ins high, is now in the possession of T Smith provost of Dumfries. The quarry was filled up about 1839 and its site is now occupied by Ayr railway station.

J Macdonald 1878

Position of quarry confirmed by OS 6" 1860 and Wood's plan of Ayr (1818). From Macdonald's illustration, the jug seems to be of medieval type.

Visited by OS (JLD) 27 December 1955.
