(NS 3386 2171) Medieval Coin Hoard found AD 1862 (NAT)

OS 25" map (1961)

A hoard of 128 coins was found in a wall of an old building, the Wheatsheaf Inn, when it was being demolished in November 1862. The coins, mainly groats and half-groats (listed by Sim) were deposited about 1490. The earliest coin was of Robert III (1390-1406), other kings represented were James I-IV, Edward III-IV, Henry V and VI. Thirty-five coins were donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS). The hoard was originally dispersed among J.Blair, watch-maker, Ayr (81 coins), A Gemmell, innkeeper (32 coins) and W. Burns (15 coins).

The Wheatsheaf Inn is shown on OS 1:500 1855 at NS 3386 2171; the Ayr Arms Hotel now occupies the site.
