Desk Based Assessment (16 June 2017)

Stobross Quay, part of the Queen’s Dock (NS56NE 8), was completed in 1882, superseding Stobcross Wharf which is depicted on the 1:500 OS Town Plan (Glasgow 1857 Sheet VI.10.11). The new dock, which exemplified the heyday of Glasgow as a mercantile port, comprised two basins and single-storey brick warehouses once lined the quays. Stobcross Quay ran along the N bank of the River Clyde and, as shown on the 1:500 OS Town Plan (1894 Glasgow, Sheets VI.10.11, VI.9.10 and VI.9.15), was backed to the north by the southern side of the South Basin. The goods sheds ran for a length of 730m along the quay, serviced by a series of rail or tram tracks and a travelling crane. The Customs Watch House (NS 5634 6553) stood at the W end of the quay, immediately SW of a swing bridge (NS56NE 88). To the W of the Custom Watch House was a set of landing steps which served the ferry between Stobross and West Quays. The Queen’s Dock closed on 31 December 1969 and was filled in prior to the construction of the Scottish Exhibition Centre (NS56NE 144). The surrounding area has been extensively redeveloped; a modern use of the river is indicated by the presence of a wooden landing stage in front of the Crown Plaza Hotel.
