Archaeology Notes

NS56NW 5 538 673.

A beaker (N type), two food vessels, and a collared cinerary urn, the latter containing cremated bones and a Crichie Group battle-axe, were found about November 1886 during the clearing of overburden in a quarry at Victoria Park.

The old quarry, now a rockery and ornamental garden, is situated at NS 538 673. The artifacts are in the People's Palace Museum, Glasgow.

Visited by OS (J H O) 7 May 1951.

In the Royal Museum of Scotland (RMS): AH 162. Re-classified as a battle-axe.

The battle-axe is of Northern Variant form. It is held in Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum under accession number GAGM 13-49f, and has been petrologically identified as (unspecified) porphyritic basalt.
