Archaeology Notes

Glasgow was created a burgh, probably between 1189 and 1198; one of the earliest requisites in the new burgh must have been the erection of a market cross. This stood adjacent to the Tolbooth (NS 5966 6490), at the convergence of the four chief streets (ie. the modern High Street, Gallowgate, Saltmarket and Trongate).

R Renwick and J Lindsay 1921.
