Archaeology Notes

NS57NE 44 587 765.

NS 585 766. A small cairn, situated at a height of about 213m OD on Craigmaddie Muir, was excavated by Morrison. It measured about 3m in diameter and was similar in appearance to many of the small Bronze Age cairnfield structures of the Scottish hills and moorlands. Preliminary probing showed depths of about 30cm in a peaty soil. Excavation revealed, however, that the cairn was lying almost immediately on bedrock, the rock having deep clefts in which the peaty podzol had formed. No artefacts or traces of burial of any kind were discovered, but among the cairn material were fragments of what might have been a standing stone. If such a stone had been located on the site, with no great depth of soil and only a natural cleft in the bedrock as a socket, then the 'cairn' might simply be supporting blocking.

Field Visit (1 November 2018)

A desk based assessment and walkover survey on Craigmaddie Muir, East Dunbartonshire were carried out by Calluna Archaeology on behalf of JDM Woodland Management. The walkover survey by Calluna Archaeology took place in November 2018. There were two sites of local archaeological significance within the application area and these consisted of a low, possible clearance cairn (NS 58721 76585) and a single millstone quarry (NS 58827 76809). It has been suggested that a buffer zone of 5m is left unplanted around these features.
