OS 6" map (1958)
The Scots under Robert the Bruce defeated an English army under Aymer de Valence at Loudoun Hill in 1307.
H Brown 1951
The site of this battle was originally published at NS 609 378, on unknown authority as the relevant ONB was destroyed by enemy action during the 1939-45 war. It was amended to its present position on the authority of McLeod, who states that it would have been impossible for the battle to have taken place where originally shown, at the foot of the precipitous S face of Loudoun Hill. From the topographic description given by Archdeacon Barbour (1316-95), quoted by McLeod, the battle must have taken place S of the River Irvine and and N of Wallace's cairn. He adds that trenches were dug by Bruce's men to prevent them being out-flanked by the English cavalry.
