Archaeology Notes

NS67NE 19 c.67 75.

A distance slab of the 20th Legion, found E of Auchendavie (NS 677 749) before 1607 is now in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow (Information from A S Robertson to OS, 1951). Alleged to have come from Balmuildy, when first mentioned by Camden in 1607, it was at Dunnottar Castle, Kincardineshire. It measures 3'2 1/2" x 2'10", and its inscription reads:

"IMP.CAESARI.T.AELIO.HADRIANO.ANTONINO.AVG.PIO.P.P.VEXILLATIO. LEG.XX.VAL.VIC.F. PER.MIL.P.III".

The precise provenance of the slab is unknown (Information from A S Robertson)
