(Area: NS 632 752) On the top of the hill above Carlestown is a large cairn under which Roman 'medals' have been formerly found. Along the N side of the hill are vast numbers of stones in the ground resembling the tracks of streets or buildings, but the ruins are not conclusive to say that this was a town.
A Gordon 1726.
Gordon speaks of two tumuli and a cairn. The tumuli can perhaps be recognised as those at West and East Balgrochan (see NS67SW 4 and NS67SW 5 ), but no trace has yet been found of the cairn.
H Fairhurst and J Scott 1956.
No trace of a cairn in this area.
Visited by OS (J P) 15 January 1974.
Note (1982)
Carlston NS67SW
The site of a cairn noted by Gordon at 'Carlestown .. . on the top of the Hill above' cannot be located. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map shows the farms of East (NS 630 747) and West Carlston (NS 625 745), but neither are depicted on Roy's Map (see also no. 14).
