(NS 7394 4566) Site of Cot Castle (NR)

OS 6" map (1913)

Cot Castle stood on an artificial mound, upon which were found, about 1838, the foundations of two mortared walls about seven feet thick which, with traces of two others, formed a square. There are some slight remains of a ditch on the north side of the mound.

Name Book 1858

All that remains of Cot Castle is a mutilated flat-topped mound situated at the confluence of the Avon Water and an unnamed stream. It is oval on plan, measuring 28.0 metres east to west by 20.0 metres north to south, and is 2.0 metres in height. No masonry is in evidence. The south-east side is mutilated by an old silage pit.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (JLD) 11 June 1959
