(NS 7054 6467) Bronze Age Burial Ground (NR)

OS 6" map (1968)

In 1852, during the extraction of sand from a field about 1.1 km SSW of Drumpellier House, nine cists were discovered disposed in a circle measuring about 13m in diameter (A Morrison 1971).

The cists were regularly spaced, 4.6m apart, and had been laid in a continuous trench about 2.4m in depth. Two outlying cists were also uncovered, one on the W and the other on the SE side. Each of the cists contained an 'urn' and in most were discovered fragments of human bones. At the centre of the circular setting there was an extensive deposit of cremated bones.

In Airdrie Public Library there are three food vessels which are labelled as being from Drumpellier and another probably from the same site, but the other urns no longer exist.

RCAHMS 1978, visited 1972

The cists referred to above were found at a point on the N side of the Edinburgh - Glasgow road, W of the Bishopburn nearly opposite the entrance to Drumpark House and about 30 yds off the main road.

A Miller 1864

NS 7054 6467. Sited to within 100m from Miller's description. The area of the site is bounded by a built-up section and pastureland on the N.

Visited by OS (JLD) 18 October 1952

NS 703 648 GUARD were contracted to undertake an assessment of a 40 acre site in advance of a proposed housing development at Coatbridge Road, Bargeddie. The previous discovery of a Bronze Age Cemetery in the immediate vicinity pointed to the possibility of archaeological deposits being present. A desk-top survey and field evaluation of the area was undertaken and established that the possibility of significant archaeological deposits being present is slight. No archaeological features of importance were present within the trial trenches that were opened.
